On the seven-day route, hikers travel from Forest Camp to Shira Camp 1 on day two, gaining about 2,000 feet in elevation—a manageable climb. Then on day three, they proceed from Shira Camp 2 to the rarely used Moir Hut, which sits at an elevation of 13,800 feet. Over time, being exposed to these elevations helps condition bodies for even greater heights encountered later in the trip. That said, the hike from Barranco to Barafu, along with Summit Day itself, remains identical between both variations. While either itinerary can be grueling, adding that one extra day spent hiking through the mountains gives participants on the seven-day route a leg up when tackling such demanding schedules compared to their counterparts trekking the shorter path.
